Grain grading is one of the last highly subjective processes in the ag supply chain and that makes it ripe for transformation, says Kyle Folk, founder and CEO of Ground Truth Ag.

Folk says his Saskatchewan-based company is using machine vision and AI to reduce inconsistency and improve speed at the grading stage, from farm to terminal.

“Grain grading has been done in this manual, labourious way for over 100 years… it’s really difficult to get a straight answer, get consistency, get transparency,” says Folk. Despite guidelines set by the Canadian Grain Commission, grading outcomes can vary significantly between graders or buyers. Compounding the issue: it takes up to eight years to fully train a human grader, and even then, accuracy expectations are only around 80 percent.

While full automation isn’t here yet, Folk says Ground Truth Ag’s technology, which uses cameras, near-infrared spectroscopy, and AI, can act as a powerful “productivity assistant.” It provides full-grade assessments, speeding up turnaround while removing ambiguity for both buyers and farmers.

The tech has appeal beyond the farm gate. “Everybody in the supply chain experiences these same problems,” says Folk. “If we can get it to be the same throughout the entire supply chain, we remove all of that unwanted ability for discrepancy or negotiations.”

Ultimately, it's not just about efficiency, it’s also about capturing lost value. “From a farm perspective, we never knew what we were leaving on the table… How do I know I’m not giving away grade?” Real-time, in-field grading could shift that calculus entirely, he says.
