How to Build a Cabinet for Organizer Box Storage Containers with Additive Woodworking Cabinetmaking

Описание к видео How to Build a Cabinet for Organizer Box Storage Containers with Additive Woodworking Cabinetmaking

Parts organizer boxes are great storage solutions, and it's a best to store them in a cabinet so you can access each one easily without having to unstack several to get to the one you're looking for. This cabinet is designed using "additive" woodworking techniques instead of cutting dados for the organizer box supports with a table saw or a router.

This cabinet is designed with support strips to hold each storage container separately. It's slightly wider than the HDX and Someline organizer boxes I'm using. The cabinet has 2 sides made of 1/2 inch plywood and a top and bottom made of 3/4 inch plywood. The sides will get another 1/4 inch piece of plywood attached to it so the cabinet edges are the same width all around. With the sides, back, top, bottom, and nailer strips cut, the next step is to make the spacers between the organizer box support strips and the support strips. I cut the support strips on an angle on the front.

Attaching the the supports and spacers to the cabinet sides can be tricky as all the parts will have glue on them. To make it easier, I use CA glue and an activator spray to instantly glue the front edge (it takes 5-10 seconds). That way it's held in place while the rest of the parts are drying from the PVA glue (aka carpenter's glue).

After the sides are glued up, I drive in screws from the cabinet side, into the support strips for added strength. These storage box containers can get heavy with metal fasteners, so strength is important.

I then add iron-on veneer edging the Cabinet Sides to conceal the face of the plywood edge.
The rest of the cabinet goes together like a traditional cabinet. Screw the top and bottom to one side. Slide in the back. Screw on the second cabinet side, and then install the nailers on the back.

As a finishing touch, I also add a sheet of maple veneer to the side of the cabinet that will be visible. I use contact cement to make a strong and permanent bond.
