Kirsty was killed saving her age 15 son from being struck by a speedboat while the family was scuba diving in Mexico, 18 December, 2000. The boy sustained minor injury, she died instantly. There was controversy over who was driving the boat. Money was received for taking the blame and punitive fines were paid in lieu of the sentenced jail time. The incident occurred in a designated diving area restricted from boats entering and the boat, owned by Mexican grocery magnate brothers, was speeding faster than reported.
