The pure, beautiful, and magnificent lands of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas
how did they come into being?
They were achieved through teaching
Every Buddha and Bodhisattva teaches the Dharma
not a single one refrains from doing so
The flourishing of Buddhism in Sri Lanka
truly comes from the efforts of their Dharma teachers
the monastics
Every monastic is capable of giving Dharma talks
and each one takes on the mission of teaching
There are over ten thousand temples across the country
Every Sunday
they open their doors for the public to come and learn
I once visited a temple without giving prior notice
because I wanted to see the reality for myself
Upon entering
I saw over three thousand people there that day
mostly students
all neatly dressed
They were seated in small circles
each group surrounding a Dharma teacher giving a talk
There appeared to be more than thirty Dharma teachers
Inside the halls
along the corridors
even in the open spaces
everywhere was filled with people sitting and learning
The orderliness was truly touching
While we were visiting
the students remained fully focused on the lessons
They didn’t whisper to each other or turn to look at us
None of that happened
They stayed calm and concentrated on their study
What we saw was deeply moving
We had never seen anything like it before
This is truly a Buddhist country
