Crookes Brass Band - Carnival of Venice (Cornet Soloist: Jamie Smith)

After a gap of some 85 years, Crookes Brass Band has been revived in partnership with Grimethorpe Education. The band meet every Wednesday from 7:30pm to 9:15pm at St. Mary’s Church in Walkley, Sheffield. There is also a Junior Band session from 6:00pm to 7:00pm for beginners.

Grimethorpe Education aimed to create a regular brass band programme in Sheffield, sparked by demand from its popular youth band workshops nearby in Barnsley. The goal was to provide a platform for adult learners, children, students, and former brass and percussion players, as well as those with limited time for band activities to come together and make music in their community.

The revival of Crookes Brass Band, which had been inactive since 1938, aligned perfectly with this initiative. The band welcomes new members but does not intend to draw players away from other established bands in Sheffield. It seeks to be an addition to the local music scene, not a competitor.

Grimethorpe Education is committed to providing free tuition and a nurturing environment to anyone who wants to learn a brass or percussion instrument.
