KOREAN STAR DRAWS CROWD OF FEMALE FANS TO AIRPORT

Thousands of Japanese fans screamed and mobbed at Tokyo's international airport Thursday to greet the arrival of South Korean soap opera star Bae Yong-joon.

The airport authority counted the biggest number of the fans for the arrival of a celebrity this Thursday ( 25 November 2004 )

Some 350 police and 70 anti-riot agents were on hand to control the crowd. Bae,32, arrived Japan to promote a book of photographs.

His television drama, "Winter Sonata," has set off a craze in Japan for all things Korean and made him one of the most sought-after celebrities here.

About 3,500 fans, some having waited since last night ( Wednesday 24 November 2004 ) crowded the airport terminal for a glimpse of the star as he arrived from Seoul.

The reaction to Bae's appearance neared hysteria.

The fans screamed and snapped pictures, many with mobile phone cameras, when Bae entered the waiting area to cheers and applause.

Bae, in stylish sunglasses, stopped as he came out and waved to the fans and smiled.

"Winter Sonata," which is to air for a fourth time in Japan in December, has won over fans with its sugary tale of an ill-fated teenage romance revived in a chance meeting many years later.

The show is especially popular among middle-aged women who say the unsophisticated filming style and heartfelt emotions of the characters make them nostalgic for Japan before its meteoric rise to wealth.

The popularity of the show has boosted travel to South Korea, interest in Korean pop culture and registrations at dating agencies that specialize in hooking Japanese women up with South Korean men.

The boom centers on Bae, whose TV image as sensitive and passionate has made him a heartthrob in Japan.
