Writers of colour, forging forward from a past in which they faced restraint and restriction, are carving a space of their own in literature today. Novelist Irenosen Okojie is the founder and director of Black to the Future. Her latest novel, Curandera, weaves through time and place to present a story of rebirth and redemption. Writer Ijeoma Oluo’s book, So You Want to Talk About Race, presents a nuanced guide on how to talk about the important issues of race and racism in society. In conversation with Sree Sreenivasan, the speakers think of their challenges, their visions for writing their legacy and communities, and what it is like to dream together of a different future.

Irenosen Okojie’s novel, Butterfly Fish, and short story collections, Speak Gigantular and Nudibranch, have won and been nominated for multiple awards. She was awarded an MBE For Services to Literature in 2021. She is the director and founder of the Black to the Future festival. Her new novel Curandera is published by Dialogue Books.

Ijeoma Oluo is a Seattle-based writer, and speaker. She is the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling first book, So You Want To Talk About Race, as well as Mediocre, and Be a Revolution. Her work on race and gender has been published in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and NBC News; and she has been featured on The Daily Show, as well as NPR’s All Things Considered. Named on the TIME 100 Next list and The Root 100, she’s been awarded the Harvard Humanist of the Year Award, the American Humanist Association’s Feminist Humanist Award, Gender Justice League’s Media Justice Award, and the Equal Opportunity Institute’s Aubrey Davis Visionary Leadership Award.

Sree Sreenivasan is president of SAJA and former Chief Digital Officer of NYC, the Met Museum, and Columbia University. He co-hosts the annual Nobel Peace Conference in Oslo. Named by Newsweek among the 20 most influential young South Asians in America, he now leads Digimentors, a digital and training agency partnering with JLF USA.
