Mays et al. report the first published genome sequence for the Sumatran rhinoceros. Genome data indicated that the demographic history of the Sumatran rhinoceros during the Pleistocene was characterized by extreme fluctuations in effective population size. By the end of the Pleistocene, Sumatran rhinoceros populations plummeted and never recovered. Niche modeling suggests that climate change played a role in these population swings during the Pleistocene.
