In 2021, a first-edition six-page copy of the U.S. Constitution printed in 1787 sold for $43.2 million at Sotheby’s.

But the Constitution you’re seeing here has its own incredible story.

This edition was printed by Hudson & Goodwin in Hartford, Connecticut likely around 1788, when Connecticut officially ratified the Constitution.

On January 9, 1788, legislators gathered to vote and copies of the Constitution were distributed. While we don’t know exactly which copies they held that day, Hudson & Goodwin was one of the state’s most important printers making it highly likely this very edition was produced for that historic moment.
