Diamonds and pearls are waiting to be found within this body, if one has the capacity to recognize them. Kabir's iconic poem meets with the delicate and nuanced tradition of thumri, and its wisdom sparkles alive. Kabir often exhorts us to not cling to this body, a mere vessel of clay, but in this poem he reminds us to not abandon it either! Although impermanent, all there is to be found - seven seas, nine lakh stars - all of it exists right here, in this vessel of flesh and bone!

The song is beautifully sung in the thumri idiom by Vidya Rao, a performer of thumri-dadra and ghazal, who has studied under the legendary late Naina Devi, Shanti Hiranand and Girija Devi. Vidya was advisor and friend to the Kabir Project in its early years from 2002-2009. She says, “Kabir may be stark and evoking the emptiness (shoonya) of the sky (gagan). But when I think of the way the sky is adorned with the sun, the moon, the rainbow… How can you say it is empty? Emptiness has this adornment. And the adornment is empty. To me they are true, when they are together.”
