Howard Thurman is among the most influential spiritual leaders, mystics, preachers, and theologians of our time. His work integrates spirituality and politics and theology and practical wisdom in life transforming ways. In this session, Bruce Epperly explores Thurman's vision of mysticism and social action and consider ways in which we can become prophetic healers in our troubled time. He also reflects on significant moments of Thurman's life, growing up in Jim Crow America, as the foundation for his theology of holy adventure and creative transformation of persons, institutions, and the planet.

BIOGRAPHY

Bruce Epperly is Theologian in Residence at Westmoreland Congregational United Church of Christ and a professor in theology and spirituality at Wesley Theological Seminary. Over the past 45 years, he has been a seminary professor and administrator, university chaplain and professor, and congregational pastor. Ordained in the United Church of Christ and Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), he is the author of over 80 books including PROCESS THEOLOGY: A GUIDE FOR THE PERPLEXED; SAVING PROGRESSIVE CHRISTIANITY TO SAVE THE PLANET; A NEW PENTECOST FOR PROGRESSIVE CHRISTIANS; and HOMEGROWN MYSTICS: RECOVERING THE SOUL OF OUR NATION THROUGH THE HEALING WISDOM OF AMERICA'S MYSTICS. He has written a trilogy of books on Howard Thurman, THE GOD OF THE GROWING EDGE: WHITEHEAD AND THURMAN ON SPIRITUALITY AND SOCIAL CHANGE; PROPHETIC HEALING: HOWARD THURMAN'S VISION OF CONTEMPLATIVE ACTIVISM; and THE WORK OF CHRISTMAS: THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS WITH HOWARD THURMAN. A fourth book, THE WISDOM OF HOWARD THURMAN FOR JUST SUCH A TIME AS NOW, will be published in 2026.
