The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) must improve how it supports UK industries to maximise the impact of the upcoming Industrial Strategy and help government achieve its priority mission of growing the economy.

DBT has made progress since it was formed two years ago:

🙏 merging teams and structures from former departments
🏗️ engaging extensively with industry stakeholders
🧠 developing sector plans using its knowledge of the economy

But there are also weaknesses in how it supports industry sectors:

❓ it has a limited view of overall government spending on business support
😶‍🌫️ there is a lack of transparency when making decisions to support industry
🔍 it needs a greater focus on evaluation to know what works

The success of the Industrial Strategy will depend on whether DBT and other departments can work effectively together, and with businesses, to drive growth in priority industries and across the whole economy.
