Becoming Utterly Simple

Saja invites the listener to “be an idiot” — to drop all knowledge and preconceptions, like a newborn experiencing reality for the first time. In that total simplicity, only one thing remains self-evident: knowing that experience is happening. This knowing is consciousness.

Discovering Pure Being

When stripped of all learned associations, what’s left is the simple awareness “I am.” Normally, we clothe this “I am” with roles and states (“I am happy,” “I am sad”), but beneath them is a naked sense of being — pure existence itself.

The Nature of Consciousness

Awareness is the constant background of all experiences — the common denominator in seeing, hearing, thinking, and feeling. It has no form or boundaries, existing beyond the dimensions of time and space. It is what allows every sense and thought to appear.

The Limits of Description

Attempting to describe awareness leads only to the disappearance of the describable, not of awareness itself. Since it lacks qualities like color or shape, it cannot be objectified or captured by thought — it simply is.

Knowing Without the Mind

Unlike all other forms of knowledge that rely on memory or thought, awareness is known without mediation. You don’t “use” the mind to find it — it’s present before, during, and after every thought. It cannot be remembered because it exists outside time and dimensionality.

Inference and Direct Experience

Drawing on Francis Lucille’s teaching, Saja explains that while most infer consciousness from the presence of objects (like inferring fire from smoke), this inference is only possible because we already know awareness directly. We can’t infer something we’ve never known.

The Autonomy of Awareness

Because consciousness exists independent of the mind, it is indivisible and untouched by experience — like the ocean to its waves. Nothing can taint or disturb it. Recognizing this reveals one’s true nature as eternally peaceful and whole.
