Hieronymus Praetorius (1560 - 1629) was organist of the Jacobikirche and Gertrudenkapelle in Hamburg. He was a prolific and masterful composer, and a substantial amount of his organ music and ensemble music survives. Two of his three sons, Jacob and Johann, went on to become great composers themselves, studying with Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck in Amsterdam.

This composition, like many of Hieronymus' Latin hymn settings, consists of two Alternatim verses: A first verse with the cantus firmus in the pedals, and a second with the cantus firmus migrating between the voices, although often in the cantus. As with so many works from this era, there is perhaps a sort of cosmic order to be found in the clarity of the counterpoint which almost orbits around the cantus firmus.

This recording is of a live performance on the 1974 Dirk Flentrop organ of Warner Concert Hall, Oberlin, OH. The instrument includes later pipework and modifications by Taylor & Boody and Hal Gober.
