The Battle of Lexington was the first military engagement of the American Revolutionary War. British troops, marching from Boston to Concord to seize colonial weapons and arrest rebel leaders, encountered a small group of militia called the "Minutemen" on the Lexington village green. It is not known which side fired it, but a shot, later called the “shot heard ’round the world" rang out, sparking a brief skirmish. The outnumbered colonists were quickly overwhelmed, and eight Americans were killed.
