The Monastery was founded by Nektarios, Bishop of Pentapolis, around the period of 1904-1910. Agios Nektarios of Aegina (1846-1920) is one of the best-known Greek Orthodox Saints. He was officially recognized as a saint in 1961. The old marble tomb where the Saint was buried after he died, housed by a little chapel, is visited every year by thousands of people from all over the world which come to pray for healing reasons.
The island of Aegina is the closest island to Athens (only 16.5 nautical miles from the Port of Piraeus). From 1827 until 1829, Aegina town was the temporary capital of the newly founded Greek state. Aegina is one of the most popular tourist destinations as it has many archaeological monuments, picturesque villages and beautiful beaches. Aegina Island offers not only beautiful sea views and the cool Mediterranean breeze but also some of Greece’s best religious sites.
