Australia’s first psychedelic clinical trial for terminally ill patients who are experiencing depression or anxiety has commenced at St Vincent’s. The trial will see 40 patients receive psilocybin alongside a short program of psychotherapy and clinical support. Psilocybin is the psychoactive compound in magic mushrooms. This treatment has been shown to dramatically reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression in cancer patients, and in many cases produces a substantial positive shift in patients’ perspectives on life, and death.
