IMPORTANCE OF CONSTITUTIONAL LITERACY

Constitutional literacy is the understanding and knowledge of the Constitution of India, which serves as the supreme law of the land. This knowledge is of paramount importance in India for several compelling reasons

1.Constitutional literacy empowers citizens by equipping them with the knowledge of their rights and duties. This awareness enables active participation in the democratic process.

2.A well-informed citizenry acts as a check against any erosion of democratic principles.

3.It holds leaders accountable and demands transparency in governance.

4.It fosters legal awareness, which is essential for individuals to navigate the legal system, access justice, and seek remedies in case of grievances.

5.A populace well-versed in the Constitution serves as a barrier against any potential abuse of power or authoritarian tendencies by those in authority.

1.Common Cause (A Regd. Society) v. Union of India (2018):
In this case, the Supreme Court emphasized the significance of public awareness and education in matters concerning electoral politics, underscoring the role of citizens in the democratic process.

2.Rajasthan High Court Legal Services Committee v. Union of India (2017):
The Supreme Court noted the importance of legal literacy and awareness programs, especially for marginalized communities, in ensuring access to justice.
Ways to Navigate Constitutional literacy in India/ Solutions
1.Centre, must adopt multidimensional approaches for developing a conscious citizenry and cultivating constitutional values among citizens.
2.It ranges from providing support to public organisations, media organisations, and research organisations working on it to using State machinery to promote constitutional values.
3.State support for promoting constitutional literacy can also be strengthened by engaging the panchayat at the grassroots level
