In 1905 the SS Hesper sank into the depths of Lake Superior. Now, an underwater ROV explores the remains of this historic wreck.

The SS Hesper was a 250-foot long bulk carrier built in 1890 in Cleveland, Ohio. The Hesper carried iron ore and other goods across the Great Lakes. In 1896 it was towing the barge Samuel Ely when the Ely sank in Two Harbors, MN. Nine years later, a spring storm would cause the Hesper to suffer the same fate.

On May 5, 1905, the Hesper encountered a spring storm on Lake Superior. 60-mile-per-hour winds pushed the ship off course into an underwater reef near Silver Bay, MN. Captain E.H. Heaton and his 15-member crew stayed on the ship as long as they could, but the ship broke apart on the reef, spreading debris for miles. The entire crew was able to board lifeboats and row to safety.

The wreck of the Hesper remained on the lake floor, although the engines, boilers, and other equipment was salvaged over the years. Some material from the wreck, including the ship's bell, can be found at the Silver Bay Marina just a few hundred yards from the ship's final resting place.
