The DRC, home to over 100 million people and some of the world’s most valuable natural resources, continues to suffer a genocide that has claimed over 20 million lives since the time of King Leopold. Today, that violence is fueled by conflict minerals—cobalt, coltan, and others—extracted for Big Tech giants like Microsoft, Google, Apple, Tesla, and Glencore, with military regimes in Rwanda and Uganda, led by Paul Kagame and Yoweri Museveni, doing the dirty work, backed by France, the UK, and the USA. Independent journalist and activist Hadija recently reported on an ESPN investigation revealing that the NBA is doing business with Rwanda through the Basketball Africa League, even as Rwanda invades eastern Congo and commits atrocities under Kagame’s leadership. Meanwhile, organizations like Giants of Africa and its co-founder Masai Ujiri continue to support Kagame and uplift his image, turning a blind eye to the ongoing suffering in the DRC. As Africa rises, so must truth and accountability—basketball cannot be a cover for bloodshed.
