Rose Bud Reef is located about 1 kilometre off Rose Bud and is usually accessed by boat. A few hardy free divers could swim out to it, an easy dive for the fit snorkel diver. It has all the usual fish species found in and around our bay and jetties. It's unclear who made it or how, but it looks like it has been a dumping ground for small, movable, round rocks, around basketball-sized and or flat, slate-like, hard sandstones of various sizes. The reef is about 200 meters long, with gaps, and reaches 2-4 meters in height. It might be 4-7 meters wide in some spots. Rubble dropped off line to the main reef allows ample brown seaweed to attach, forming a dense weed cover on and around the reef. Without the flat rocks, the seaweed has nothing but sand to attach to. Otherwise, it would be a flat, sandy area with little visible fish life. This reef is well known for its Port Jackson shark populations, their eggs, Boarfish, the odd big cuttlefish, and round-shaped Stony coral heads.

Stony coral has taken a liking to the area, and there are examples wherever you look. They are not reef-building corals and are solitary corals. How and why they form and grow in our bay has always fascinated me.
