On Day 1 of the Bhagavat Mahapuran Swamiji sets the stage by giving the importance of this divine and nectarine scripture.

In the first episode of Srimad Bhagavatam Mahapuran lecture series in English, Swami Mukundananda says that in all the Vedic scripture, the position accorded to the Srimad Bhagavatam Mahapuran is exceptional. The Vedas are, of course, the highest authority.

However, Srimad Bhagavatam Mahapuran is like the essence of the Vedic teachings, written by Ved Vyas himself. Knowledge of Vedas and Upanishads is presented in such a blissful manner, with all the Divine pastimes of God and His devotees, that listening to the Bhagavat Katha becomes an experience in itself. Not only does it illuminates our intellect with Divine wisdom, it also moves our heart and fills them with the nectar of Divine love. That is why it is said that this Srimad Bhagavatam Mahapuran has something that even the Vedas do not have.

Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj says,
"Vandaniya hai Upanishad, inme gyan mahan
Shyam prem binu gyan so pran hin tanu jaan"

The Upanishads do have Divine knowledge but they do not have the bliss of Divine love and the sri... has both.
Swami Mukundananda also relates a story from Puranas. Guru of Mother Parvati- vamdev Maharaj asked her, "Parvati, your husband Lord Shiva wears this mund-maal (garlands of heads) of beautiful women. Have you never asked him?" He invoked jealousy in Parvati. She went and asked Lord Shiva the same question. Lord Shiva said, "Parvati, these are your heads. Each time you give-up your body, I am so attached to you that I pick-up your head and make a garland out of it." Parvati was pacified but she asks, "My Lord, I keep giving-up body but you never give up the body, what is the matter?" Lord Shiva says, "Parvati, the reason is that I have got the Amar Katha- the immortal story. And by virtue of that, I am immortal."
What is this immortal story, how Lord Shiva tells mother Parvati the story and what happens in between? Listen to the full episode of "Bhagavatam in English- Swami Mukundananda- Part 1"
