Doleshwar Mahadev Temple is located in Suryabinayak Municipality, southeast of Bhaktapur District, Nepal . It is considered the main center of Kedarnath in Uttarakhand, India.
History
4000 years ago, people searched for the head of the Pancha Kedar temples. The creation of the Pancha Kedar temples is described in many folk legends.
According to a folk legend about Panch Kedar, this place is associated with the Pandavas of the Hindu epic Mahabharata . In the Kurukshetra War, the Pandavas defeated and killed their cousins, the Kauravas. The Pandavas wanted to atone for the sins of fratricide (killing of clans) and brahminicide (killing of Brahmins - the priestly class) committed during the war . Thus , they handed over their kingdom to their relatives and set out in search of Shiva, seeking his blessings. First, they went to the holy city of Varanasi (Kashi), a favorite city of Shiva, famous for the Kashi Vishwanath temple . But, Shiva was deeply angered by the massacre and betrayal of the Kurukshetra War. Sensitive to the prayers of the Pandavas, he took the form of a bull (Nandi) and hid in the Garhwal region.
When Shiva did not appear in Varanasi , the Pandavas went to the Garhwal Himalayas . Bhima, the second of the five Pandava brothers, stood on two mountains and started searching for Shiva. He saw a bull grazing near Guptkashi ("Hidden Kashi" - the name given to Shiva because he was hidden). Bhima immediately recognized the bull as Shiva. Bhima caught the bull by its tail and hind legs. But Shiva in the form of a bull disappeared into the earth, growing a hump at Kedarnath, hands appearing at Tungnath, face and navel appearing at Rudranath, abdomen appearing at Madhyamaheshwar, and hair appearing at Kalpeshwar. The Pandavas were happy to see Shiva reappear in five different forms, and temples were built at five places to worship Shiva. Thus the Pandavas were freed from their sins. It is also believed that the foreparts of Shiva have been seen at the Doleshwar Mahadev Temple in Bhaktapur District, Nepal.
In this incident , Bhima not only caught the bull, but also stopped it from disappearing. As a result, the bull split into five parts and appeared at five places in Kedar Khand in the Garhwal region of the Himalayas. After the Pandavas built the Pancha Kedar temples at their respective places, they meditated and performed a yagna at Kedarnath for salvation, and then attained heaven or moksha through the heavenly path called Mahapanth (also known as Swargarohana). The Pancha Kedar temples resemble the architectural style of the North-Indian Himalayan temples of Kedarnath, Tungnath, and Madhyamaheshwar.
