Oral cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in India, often caused by harmful habits such as chewing tobacco, gutka, and khaini. At Narayana Health, we treat thousands of patients with oral cancer every year, offering them new hope through world-class medical care. This video highlights a real-life patient story and explains the importance of early detection, surgery, and treatment in fighting oral cancer.
Patient Story
Mr. Soniram Kisku, from Malda district, shared his uncle’s journey. His uncle developed oral cancer after years of consuming tobacco (bidi). At Narayana Hospital, Howrah, under the care of Dr. Kantamani Bala Teja, he underwent surgery and recovered well.
Another patient, Nimuni Murmu’s husband from Banga, developed a sore in the mouth due to chewing khaini. Upon consulting the doctors, the family learned it was cancer. Surgery was performed successfully, and he too is now doing well.
One patient with locally advanced oral cancer came to us after suffering for nearly 3–4 years. The cancer had spread to his teeth, tongue, and mouth. A CT scan and biopsy confirmed squamous cell carcinoma. Without delay, our oncology team performed surgery, followed by chemotherapy and radiation. The patient was discharged within a week and continues to recover well.
Oral Cancer Treatment at Narayana Health
At Narayana Health, our approach to oral cancer treatment includes:
Diagnosis through CT scans, biopsies, and other investigations
Surgery to remove cancerous growths as the first line of treatment
Chemotherapy and radiation therapy for advanced or high-risk cases
Post-surgery rehabilitation and follow-up care
The first goal of an oncologist or cancer surgeon is to remove the tumor from the body. Once surgery is performed, the next steps—such as chemotherapy or radiation—are planned according to the patient’s needs.
Importance of Awareness
Habits like tobacco chewing, gutka, and khaini are the leading causes of oral cancer in India. We strongly encourage everyone to quit or reduce these habits to minimize the risk of developing mouth cancer.
Prevention is always better than cure. Early diagnosis of oral cancer symptoms such as persistent mouth sores, pain, swelling, or difficulty in chewing can save lives. Visiting an oncologist at the earliest ensures timely treatment and better chances of recovery.
