Studios thought internet memes were real demand. They were wrong.

After Venom made over $856 million dollars Sony wanted their own Spider Man universe without Spider Man. When they announced Morbius fans were willing to give it a shot. Then Sony hired Jared Leto which made everyone nervous after Suicide Squad. Sony gave it a $75 million dollar budget. Morbius limped into theaters in April 2022. The plot barely existed. Made for $75 million, it earned 163 million worldwide. After marketing costs it barely broke even. 5.1 on IMDb. Then the internet turned Morbius into a meme. People ironically claimed it was the greatest movie ever made.

It's Morbin Time became a viral catchphrase even though nobody says it in the movie. Sony thought the memes meant people actually liked it. In June 2022 they re released Morbius into theaters genuinely believing the internet praise was real. The Morbius re release brought in around 300,000 dollars. The movie bombed twice in theaters. Same movie, two separate theatrical runs, both failures.

The Batman franchise in the early 2000s was exhausted but Catwoman remained popular. Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns was iconic. Fans begged for a Catwoman spinoff. Warner Brothers spent 100 million dollars on a Catwoman movie that had nothing to do with Selina Kyle, Batman, or Gotham. Instead Patience Phillips discovers her boss is selling beauty cream that destroys users. She gets deleted, comes back to life with cat powers, and starts hissing at dogs. The Catwoman disaster cost $100 million and made $82 million worldwide. 3.4 on IMDb, 9 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Halle Berry showed up to the Razzies with her Oscar and thanked everyone who made the movie possible. Warner Brothers turned the biggest box office flop into one of Hollywood's most embarrassing superhero spinoff failures.

The John Wick franchise built an entire secret assassin world. When Lionsgate announced Ballerina starring Ana de Armas with Keanu Reeves returning, people were excited. Ana de Armas had proven she could handle action. The John Wick spinoff would explore the ballet assassin training program. The trailer addressed the serious disadvantage most women have in physical violence against men and showed how she would overcome it. Cheat, fight dirty, use weapons, exploit weaknesses. It was refreshing.

Then Ballerina hit theaters in June 2025 and the response was a collective shrug. The movie was fine. The action scenes were competent. The Ana de Armas Ballerina review consensus was that the script gave her a generic revenge plot with none of the emotional weight that made John Wick compelling. Keanu Reeves shows up and feels contractually obligated. Made for $90 to $100 million, it earned $137 million worldwide. It opened to 25 million when projections had it earning $35 to $40 million. Movies that lost money after marketing.

When Daredevil came out in 2003 everyone agreed Jennifer Garner was awesome as Elektra. Mysterious, dangerous, compelling. Fox fast tracked an Elektra movie. Garner was a breakout star through Alias. The budget was 43 million. Fans were curious. Then it fell apart. The studio went PG 13 which meant no blood in a movie about an assassin. The Elektra movie failure was complete. Every kill was bloodless, every fight felt like dancing. The plot involves Elektra babysitting a father and daughter from an evil ninja cult. Mystical powers are never explained.

The action was so tame everyone looked like they were gently pushing each other. Jennifer Garner tried but the script gave her nothing. Fans wanted a badass assassin film. They got a watered down TV movie. Made for $43 million, Elektra earned only 56 million worldwide. 4.7 on IMDb, 11 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Franchise spinoffs nobody asked for that bombed so badly Fox canceled all their other planned Daredevil spinoffs.
