Seven enslaved persons lived in the eighth slave dwelling at Somerset Place in 1843, including the families of George and Clarissa Grey and Dick and Abagail Blount. Somerset Place, once one of the largest plantations in antebellum North Carolina and now a representative state historic site, is open to the public Tuesday - Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It is our aim to offer visitors a comprehensive social history exploring the family life of all former plantation residents: the enslaved community, plantation owners, and hired white and Black employees.
