The most common symptom of radiculopathy is back pain. It occurs due to compression of the nerve roots. Back pain due to radiculopathy can occur in the cervical, thoracic, or lumbar region of the spine. The location of pain depends on various factors.

Often, lumbar radiculopathy pain can extend into the legs, and cervical pain due to radiculopathy can radiate into the arms. This depends on which spinal nerves are compressed. The nerves extend into the extremities from the spine.

In most cases, the pain of radiculopathy increases with movement. The reason for this phenomenon is compression of the nerve roots during movement of the vertebrae. Back pain in radiculopathy is usually intermittent; it may come and go during the day.

Besides pain, radiculopathy can cause weakness, numbness, and cramping in the legs and arms. These conditions arise due to nerve compression, too.
