Changing of the Guard Ceremony

One of the highlights of visiting the Royal Palace is witnessing the Changing of the Guard (Högvakten), a tradition that dates back to the 16th century. The ceremony showcases Sweden’s royal traditions and military precision.

1. Schedule

The ceremony typically occurs daily during the summer months (May to August) and less frequently during the winter. Exact timings can vary but usually take place around 12:15 PM on weekdays and 1:15 PM on Sundays and holidays.

It lasts approximately 40 minutes.



2. The Process

The event begins with the marching band and soldiers arriving at the palace square, dressed in traditional blue and white uniforms.

The band plays a variety of music, ranging from classical military tunes to contemporary pieces.

The guards then perform a formal handover, marked by synchronized movements and ceremonial commands.
