The NeuroMedical Center’s Dr. Gregory L. Fautheree is Baton Rouge’s first neurosurgeon to successfully treat a brain aneurysm using the Woven EndoBridge (WEB®) Aneurysm Embolization System. This FDA-approved, minimally-invasive technology has been called a huge advancement in the treatment of challenging aneurysms that often require multiple implants or open brain surgery.

A brain aneurysm is an abnormal bulging or ballooning of a blood vessel in the brain called an artery. Aneurysms are filled with blood and in some circumstances may rupture leading to serious consequences including severe functional disability, cognitive loss, and even death.

The WEB® System is designed to disrupt blood flow entering the aneurysm. The WEB® implant, a permanent, self-expanding mesh basket implant made from flexible ultra-fine wires braided together, is threaded with a catheter through the arm or groin and released into the sac of the aneurysm. Different sizes of the device are made to fit different types and shapes of aneurysms. The device is deployed directly in the aneurysm to pack it and promote clot formation, healing of the vessel, and normal blood flow. In most cases, the body seals off the neck of the aneurysm over time, essentially curing it.

In clinical testing, the WEB® System was shown to be highly effective and safer than other options currently on the market. Additionally, the WEB® device allows surgeons to treat aneurysms without the need for placing stents in the brain, which keeps patients off of post-procedure blood thinning medications, such as Plavix.
