How do you feel about marriage? Today’s media paints it as old-fashioned and unnecessary while also making it look picture-perfect like the Hallmark movies. Combing through all of these misconceptions about marriage can leave you feeling confused. What makes things even more confusing is trying to answer the question of why we still desire it. God designed and intended for marriage to be the foundation for all human society. Because of this design, it gives us the innate desire to want a fulfilling intimate marriage. So how does a couple achieve this kind of marriage? For starters, every relationship has conflict. But as we can grow in our relationship with Jesus, and in the process learn to grow in our relationship with one another, we learn to love, change, make allowance for, and serve one another. It’s also inevitable that we all have differences which means at some point we’re going to be annoying, selfish, or even unkind from time to time. Expecting everything in marriage to be perfect all the time will cause disappointment. If, however, we acknowledge and embrace the differing personalities, backgrounds, hopes, and dreams, our approach to those differences can be one of celebration and understanding. There is something amazing that happens when a man and woman come together as one through the intimate commitment of marriage -- the relationship becomes one of stability, passion, and intimacy. God knew we would be better together. The beauty of marriage works when we step into God’s design to love one another just like Jesus loves us.
