Good roads and easy access to the trailhead southwest of Hamilton. The hike to the far rocky crag past the weather station is 13 miles out and back and about a 5,000 foot ascent. About 75 percent of this hike is through burnout (from the 2016 fire), so there is virtually no shade until the last two miles of the trail (take sunblock). This is a well-maintained trail, but it is a steady grind up. The first two miles on powder – rated moderate in difficulty. The last 4.5 miles of the trail is more rocky and steeper – rated difficult (walking sticks are a necessity for this section of the hike). I am 60 years old and it took two hours to get to the rocky crag (4 miles) and another 90 minutes to get to the top. There is a stream to ford at 5 miles (you can walk across by going above the stream). The stream provided a nice cool drink through my life-straw. There are no other water sources on this hike, so pack plenty of water. A few biting flies in upper portion. I started this hike at 6:00AM to avoid the heat and did not see another hiker for seven hours. I did get caught in two separate thunderstorms. This is a hard hike, but the views are spectacular – well worth the effort!!
