We all know that the world is changing. As one of my friends said, "I like to think that even if I didn't know about the science of climate change, I would still be able to tell that something is happening just by how different everything feels". I agree. In the span of a single human lifetime, things have changed enough that it is becoming significantly harder to deny that climate change is real. The science unequivocally backs up that the environment is changing drastically, and that it is caused by human activity on the planet. This is precisely why many scientists have termed the current geological epoch the Anthropocene.

If all civilization disappeared tomorrow, there would be a clear line for future archeologists where modern human society began. Bone and stone artifacts suddenly give way to a world of metal and plastics.

The current moment is critical. We have the opportunity to steer society away from a very difficult future, and we have the technology to do it. It is only a question of developing the will and directing the effort. There are those that say we need not worry because there are some very smart people working on it, but it would be foolish to think that this will be an effortless transition. We must make active changes to our lives and our lifestyles. We must rethink our points of view.

This moment is a moment when we can choose a better way forward. This is a moment when we can choose clean rivers, healthy forests, and a promising future. The Anthropocene need not be the next mass extinction. It can be a time to flourish and revitalize diversity.
