(1 Feb 2020) The first day of Brexit in Northern Ireland was marked by only small groups of pro and anti-Brexit events along the border, with some newspapers covering other stories on their front pages.
The Belfast Telegraph, The Irish News and Northern Ireland's Daily Star stayed clear of Brexit, with the former instead reporting on the Coronavirus.
The Tabloid Daily Star made a tongue-in-cheek reference to Brexit announcing that the big story of "this historic day" was about a veterinarian saving a dog.
Newspapers in the Republic of Ireland were slightly more interested with the events in Westminster, with the Irish Times featuring a large photo of the Union flag taken on Friday night during the celebrations in London, while the Tabloid Irish Daily Star promises Brexit reporting on page 14.
On the streets on Newry along the North-South border in Ireland, Brexit day was anticlimactic after years of worries and fears of renewed violence.
"I would feel a bit apprehensive for where all of this is going to lead to," said Morris McCavett, a 60-year-old currency exchange store owner who remembers the long queues at the customs and border more than twenty years ago.
For some of the younger generation, nothing seems to have changed and Brexit isn't a main preoccupation this morning.
"It's exactly the same," said Oresta McQuillan with her husband Conor.
Other than watching a news report showing the removal of the Union flag from Brussels' EU council, Conor said, "I feel the exact same".
