Описание к видео The King-Ship of the Seleukids: The Anchor Symbol on Early Seleukid Coinage and Its Origins

In this lecture, Dr. Eva Anagnostou (Macquarie University) explored the origin and significance of the anchor symbol in Seleukid culture. Though frequently linked to Seleukos I's decisive naval victory against Antigonos, Dr. Anagnostou shows that the anchor also reflected the Babylonian god Marduk's connection to the moored ship of state, and was thus aligned with Seleukos' conciliatory appeals to both Greek and non-Greek subjects.

This presentation is a recording of NUMISMA's March meeting, held on March 28 2024. NUMISMA is the seminar series of the Australian Centre for Ancient Numismatic Studies. Researchers, students, curators and collectors interested in the study of ancient coins are welcome and encouraged to join our monthly seminars.
