From 1989 to 2007, the Doo-Wop Society of Southern California worked passionately to showcase the pioneers of rhythm and blues and vocal group harmony. Less than three weeks after the unexpected death of Richard Berry, the organization honored their longtime friend and supporter with a special tribute show. At this event, filmed at the Petroleum Club in Long Beach, California on February 8, 1997, Jennell Hawkins shared her memories of Richard and played and sang his composition, “Moments” (also issued as “Moments To Remember”), which she had first recorded in 1962. Jennell is accompanied by Billy Collins on tenor saxophone and the Ambertones band. Thankfully, the DWS filmed their concert events and made them available to the public. Beginning in the 1970s, Jennell worked with a jazz sextet and with artists including Johnny Morisette and Big Jay McNeely. An original member of the Dreamers, who backed Berry on a number of his recordings, Jennell also reunited with them at a similar event in 2002. Three years later, she suffered a major stroke which ended her performing career. Jennell Hawkins died in October of 2006 at age 68.
