Having grown up in top tier studios around world class recording equipment, one compressor seems to be the top producer's favorite. I kept seeing it everywhere, away from all the racks of gear in a special place, closer to the desk than everything else. Ever since EMI techs at Abbey Road Studios converted the Altec 436 into the RS124 (made famous by being used on almost every Beatles record ever produced), the Altec 436 has reached legendary status amongst the best of the best. I've touched on this unit in other videos so often I figured it was time for this comp to get its own feature. I present to you, one of the greatest, if not THE greatest audio compressor ever made, the Altec 436.

This video features the 436C. The Altec 436 had three versions, the A, B and C. The C is differentiated by having threshold and release screw pots on the faceplate that must be replaced with 100K long shaft potentiometers to be used in a studio for modern control.
