Allah ﷻ commands both believing men and believing women—individually—to lower their gaze. This is not a general command, but a direct instruction to each of us. Lowering the gaze has the clear and obvious meaning: to turn away from looking at what is haram. By doing so, we protect our chastity and safeguard our hearts.

But lowering the gaze is more than just avoiding indecent images. It also means protecting ourselves from constantly looking at the blessings of others. In today’s world, social media and entertainment are filled with people displaying their wealth, relationships, and lifestyles. If we are not careful, this can lead to jealousy, ingratitude, and even resentment towards the decree of Allah. When we focus too much on others, we overlook our own blessings and forget that every person also carries hidden tests.

Lowering the gaze, then, becomes an act of protecting the heart—not only from temptation, but from envy and dissatisfaction. True contentment comes when we stop comparing and start appreciating what Allah has given us. Everyone has blessings, and everyone has trials. No life is perfect, no matter how it appears from the outside.

And when hardship comes, patience (ṣabr) is not about swallowing grief or pretending everything is fine. It is about acknowledging our emotions while keeping our trust in Allah. Even the Prophets—who had the greatest patience—shed tears and felt sorrow. The Prophet ﷺ himself cried at the loss of his son, saying: “The eyes shed tears and the heart grieves, but the tongue will not say except what pleases Allah.”

May Allah grant us the ability to lower our gaze, protect our hearts, and practice true patience with gratitude.
