Microsoft reigned supreme in the office space by the late 90's, a far cry compared to the start of the decade where they were playing catch-up to Lotus Software and their offerings. While Microsoft Word for DOS was in the shadow of WordPerfect and Multiplan and early Excel was in the shadow of Lotus 123, with Windows 3.0, the updated Microsoft applications started to take the lead and dominate through the remainder of the decade. Microsoft followed up to the success with bundling them together (again, as a response to Lotus SmartSuite) to form Microsoft Office. Microsoft 4.2 became the goto for many PC users who needed the full bundle of Redmond's offerings on their computer. Office was updated for Windows 95. Office 97 added additional features, including the well-intentioned, but poorly executed, office assistant who shall be forever confined to digital purgatory for all eternity.

Office 2000, the next major release, was released on June 1999. All the Microsoft applications were updated as well. The big feature was the ability to create HTML documents. Thus, Microsoft Word could become a WYSIWYG HTML Editor. In theory, this could have been a really awesome feature except for the fact that HTML documents created in Word were greatly limited in features and capabilities, and largely only compatible with Internet Explorer. Microsoft was already thumbing their noses as universal web standards and a open web in an attempt to get users to embrace proprietary Microsoft web technologies. The web technologies support in Office 2000 made use of Internet Explorer 5.

Office also supported roaming profiles. For anyone who runs a server, they already know what I'm talking about. But for those who aren't familiar, a roaming profile is essentially a standard Windows user profile, but stored on a server and loaded over the network when the user logs into their account through a Windows Domain. The main advantage of this is that the user's exact desktop (and their settings) can be loaded onto any computer that is a part of that domain. Thus, the user's Microsoft Office settings could be used, regardless of whatever computer they load their profile from.

86Box is emulating a multimedia PC with Shuttle HOT-557 Socket 7 (Daul Voltage) i430VX motherboard, IDT WinChip2 (Model 6) Processor running at 233MHz with 64MB's of RAM. Also installed is a 3DFX Voodoo 3 1000 accelerator. Windows running at the screen resolution of 800 by 600, 16-bit color depth. Also installed is a Creative Labs SoundBlaster 16 for audio and an AMD PCnet-FAST III NIC installed for networking support. The Dell OEM version of Windows 98 is installed.
