A.M. Naik joined Larsen & Toubro (L&T) in 1965 as a young engineer and turned around the fate of not just the company but the engineering industry with his entrepreneurial spirit, hard work, and zeal to excel.
Mr. Naik became the Chairman and Managing Director of L&T in 2003. Over the next decade and a half, he transformed the engineering services company into one of India’s foremost conglomerates spanning engineering and construction, energy, finance and IT. When he took over the steering wheel in 2003, the combined market cap of the group was around Rs.13,000 crore. Today, the group market capitalization has grown over 1,800% to around Rs. 2.57 lakh crore.
A perfectionist and a workaholic, Mr. Naik has always inspired excellence in his teams. He invested heavily in grooming future leaders – starting the Young Leader programme, which helped the conglomerate maintain its rapid growth and sustained leadership.
Under his stewardship, L&T has engaged in sectors of national significance of defense, nuclear, energy, aerospace, infrastructure, oil & gas and power. Imbibing the motto of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’, he has given a strong ‘Make in India’ orientation to the company's products and won L&T the title of ‘the company that is building 21st Century India”.
For his immeasurable contributions to nation-building over five decades, he was recognized with the Padma Vibhushan in 2019.
