In recent years, the relationship between the United States and South Asia has undergone a subtle but significant shift. Washington, once vocal about its strategic partnership with India, now seems to be recalibrating its approach — quietly improving ties with Pakistan while expressing discomfort over certain Indian policies. The big question is: why is this happening? The answer lies in a mix of geopolitical strategy, economic interests, and global power balance. After the withdrawal from Afghanistan, the U.S. lost a key foothold in the region. Pakistan, with its geographical proximity and influence over Afghan affairs, once again became useful for America. The U.S. sees Pakistan as a practical partner for regional stability, counterterrorism, and even communication with the Taliban regime — something India has limited access to.

Meanwhile, India’s growing closeness with Russia has become a point of tension for Washington. Despite Western sanctions, India continues to buy discounted Russian oil and maintain defense relations with Moscow. This doesn’t sit well with the U.S., which is trying to isolate Russia economically and politically after the Ukraine war. Moreover, India’s independent foreign policy — reflected in its refusal to directly criticize Russia or join Western alliances fully — has made Washington rethink how “aligned” New Delhi truly is.

On the other hand, Pakistan is taking advantage of this situation. The new civilian government is actively seeking to rebuild trust with Washington by presenting itself as a moderate, cooperative state ready to support U.S. interests in regional matters. Additionally, the U.S. sees Pakistan as a useful tool to balance China’s growing influence in the region — especially through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). By keeping Pakistan close, Washington ensures it still has leverage in South Asia.

In short, the U.S. is not abandoning India, but it’s playing a classic diplomatic balancing act. It wants India as a counterweight to China in the Indo-Pacific, yet it also wants Pakistan as a functional ally in regional security. The result is a visible “cooling” with India and a “warming” with Pakistan. This shift doesn’t mean friendship or betrayal — it’s pure geopolitics, driven by interests, not emotions. In global politics, alliances are never permanent — only national interests are.
