Our scientists and collaborators have documented what is likely the first recorded birthing migration of a scalloped hammerhead shark (𝘚𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘳𝘯𝘢 𝘭𝘦𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘪), one of the world’s most critically endangered sharks. 🦈

Using Closed Circuit Rebreathers and a remora-style towed satellite tag, we followed a likely pregnant female named “Alicia” on a 6,000 km journey—from Galapagos to Panama’s nursery areas and into the high seas west of the archipelago. This is the longest track ever recorded for this species and likely the first scientific record of a birthing migration.

This finding offers essential insight into hammerhead reproductive behavior and highlights the urgent need for international cooperation to protect sharks beyond national boundaries.
