Does the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) target taxpayers for audits through discrimination?

Stanford University recently released a new study titled “Measuring and Mitigating Racial Disparities in Tax Audits” that we will be going over. Unfortunately, racially motivated discrimination is still a part of our society and apparently, it can be found within our government as well.

“Black taxpayers in this country, right now, are being audited about 2.9 to 4.7 more often than their counterparts.” 2:39

Tax audits are performed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in an attempt to ensure that taxpayers are not cheating the government out of money. According to a study done by Stanford University, the IRS may be discriminating against certain groups based on race.

The IRS has the ability to audit any return but is not required by law to do so. However, if a taxpayer is selected for an audit, they will be required to provide documentation supporting all claims made on their tax return.
