Despite the chokehold, Indonesia is capable of producing some noteworthy original content and creative works that are unique in terms of storytelling and themes, often challenging the status quo through subtle messages, containing provocative yet substantial content. Expression in Indonesia is tied with how educational it is, while creativity is not tied to anything literal or should have any value at all. And while content creators continue to challenge the lines of what is acceptable, it is a game of chicken where Indonesia’s creative boundaries are pushed by sacrificing people who are willing to push those boundaries at the cost of their reputation.
