National Cadet Corps (NCC) completes 69 years of existence this year, the anniversary celebrations were held at the Fort Willliam stadium in Kolkata today under the aegis of the West Bengal and Sikkim Directorate. The celebration included a cultural extravaganza interspersed with demonstrations by cadets of the three wings of the NCC, viz Army Navy and Air Force.The Guest of Honour for the event was Dr. RS Shukla, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Govt. of West Bengal. Maj Gen LB Chand, VSM, the ADG of NCC Dte (WB & Sikkim) and other senior Officers were also present.
The event began with the marching in of flags of India, NCC and the three services by cadets mounted on horses. This was followed by a performance of cadets of the Army wing wherein a section of 10 Infantry soldiers in combat gear took on the enemy holding a post in a simulated demonstration that drew a thunderous applause from the spectators.History of origin of the National Cadet Corps can be traced back to 1942 when the University Officers Training Corps was established by the British. For better training of more young men, a committee headed by Pandit HN Kunzru recommended a cadet organisation to be established in schools and colleges at the national level. Subsequently, the National Cadet Corps Act was accepted by Governor General and on 16th July 1948 the National Cadet Corps came into existence. Since then NCC has been rendering great service in promoting qualities of character, discipline, leadership and secular outlook in the youth. National Cadet Corps has shaped the lives of millions of people of the country.NCC activities in West Bengal & Sikkim under NCC Dte are spread over 23 districts covering 7 Universities, 199 Colleges and 660 Schools. With 47 Army, two Naval and 4 Air Force units in the Dte, it has a strength of about a lakh cadets, with 60% of them coming from rural and the semi rural areas.
