Mission San Luis Rey was founded on June 13, 1798 by Father Fermín de Lasuén. It is named after St. Louis IX, king of France and patron of the Secular Franciscan Order, but is known as ”King of the Missions” because of its size, population, and crop production.

Mission San Luis Rey is the 18th mission of California, but the 2nd stop on our pilgrimage.
