REASONS WHY THE ARABS CAME TO THE EAST AFRICAN COAST BETWEEN AD
1000 AND 1500.  The Arabs were attracted by the Indian Ocean trade. This trade was between the East
African coast and the outside world across the Indian Ocean but the Arabs wanted to
control this trade which would generate profits for them.  The Arabs were driven by the desire to spread Islam and the Islamic culture on the
coast. The arabs were strong Muslims who wanted to Islamize the whole coast and set
up a Moslem Empire.  The availability of good natural harbours at the coast also attracted the Arabs. The East
African coast was blessed with good natural habours which could allow even big ships to
anchor.  The presence of moonsoon winds also encouraged the Arabs to come to the coast
because they blew the dhows to and from the East African coast.  The political persecutions and power struggles in Arabia forced the deafeated groups to
seek refuge at the East African coast which was safer. For example, there were the
Yorubi and Busaidi Family struggles in Oman.  The Arabs especially the young men were encouraged by the spirit of exploration and
love for adventure. They had the desire to explore unknown lands or areas.  The hospitality offered by the coastal peoples also encouraged many Arabs to come to
the East African coast.  The Arabs were also attracted by the fertile soils at the coast. There was a lot of free
and fertile land at the coast which the Arabs wanted to use for agriculture.  The presence of fresh drinking water at the coast also attracted many Arabs to settle at
the East African coast.  The religious conflicts and persecutions (mistreatment) back home also forced many
Arabs to come and settle at the East African coast.  The prosperous coastal trade also attracted the Arabs to come. The coast had highly
demanded goods like Gold, Slaves, Ivory and Skins which forced many Arabs to come
and settle at the coast and obtain these commodities cheaply.  The Arabs were also attracted by the coastal climate. The ideal or good coastal climate
in terms of rainfall and temperature was favourable for settlement and agriculture.
