So I'm tendering my resignation, taking effect after this afternoon's commemoration of VE (Victory in Europe) Day at the Cenotaph. I want to do so straight away because the party needs to have an open and honest debate about the right way forward without constraint."
STORYLINE
UK Labour leader Ed Miliband announced his resignation on Friday after his party suffered a worse-than-expected result in Britain's parliamentary election.
Prime Minister David Cameron has won an absolute majority, taking 326 of the possible 650 seats up for grabs in the House of Commons.
