So, North Korea, after all, was the culprit behind the string of cyber attacks that hit major broadcasters and financial institutions in South Korea last month.

The South Korean government disclosed the conclusion of their investigation earlier this Wednesday.

Our Kim Han-ul tells us how North Korea paralyzed tens of thousands of computers and servers here in the South. The methods used to carry out the hacking incident in March were identical to the ones previously identified as being from North Korea,

such as the 2012 hacking of the Korea JoongAng Daily newspaper and the hacking of Nonghyup Bank in 2011.

That's the conclusion of a team of experts from the government, military and civil agencies, who made the announcement Wednesday.

"We've determined that the hackers made a total of 1-thousand-590 connections through at least six PCs in North Korea or abroad and a North Korean IP address was used in 13 instances."

On March 20th, a widespread cyber attack froze computers and communications networks, crippling major TV broadcasters and commercial banks in South Korea.

Chun Kil-soo from the Korea Internet Security Center says the hackers had been preparing for the cyber attack for at least eight months in advance.

The attack was carried out through malware, which was leaked into the system through an update program.

No damage from the attack last month has been reported but internet banking sites and ATM machines were shut down and customers were inconvenienced.

"The government is expected to prepare follow up measures for enforcing South Korea's cyber security at a meeting on Thursday with officials from 15 related ministries and government organizations.
