A playthrough of Sachen's unlicensed 1990 beat 'em up for the NES, Challenge of the Dragon.

This Double Dragon-style brawler from Sachen is one of two unlicensed NES games to bear the name "Challenge of the Dragon". The other, an action-platformer, was published by Color Dreams, also in 1990.

Look at the back of the box and you'll be greeted with the following:

"PASS THE TESTS OF SOU LIN, THE KUNG FU TEMPLE. YOU WILL BECOME A REAL MAN ON MAN.

Master Lee had finished his training courses in Sou Lin temple, so he decided to go outside to create a new career. Before he left, he have to pass a traditional kungfu test which is very hard for every one.

There are total 5 stages in these tests, you have to pass each one step by step and collect the sacred box or other special objects for getting more powerful Kungfu. You will yet come face to face with Vadjin in the final term of each stage after you passed the basic trials. You also will discover more secrets of Sou Lin which no one knows in trap."

That description is something else, ain't it?

Playing as the career-hunter who yearns for man on man action, it's your place to guide Master Lee in the quest to plow his way through droves of shirtless dudes. Luckily, he has a veritable arsenal of talents: he can punch people in the face, he can punch them in the junk, he can jump and kick them in the face, he can kick them in the feet, he can shout aggressively, and he can use magic to attack or heal.

Challenge of the Dragon is ridiculous, and it looks and plays like off-brand Double Dragon, but in this case, that's not a bad thing. The graphics are good. The music won't make dogs howl, and some of it is even catchy. The controls are decent. The difficulty is reasonable. It's a fun game.

The quality of Sachen's titles was usually a cut above that of the usual unlicensed crap, and this is no exception. It's better than some of the NES's official releases. Unlike Target: Renegade (   • Target: Renegade (NES) Playthrough  ), I enjoyed this one!
