1. Giant Weta

Giant weta are several species of weta
in the genus Deinacrida wich are
endemic to New Zealand and are
examples of island gigantism

Large species can reach more than
10 cm and have a body mass up to 35g!

Making it one of the heaviest
documented insects in the world
and heavier than a sparrow

They are found primarily on New
Zealand offshore islands, having been
almost exterminated on the
mainland islands by introduced
mammalian pests

2. Giant Water Bug

Belostomatidae is a family of freshwater
hemipteran insects known as giant water
bugs or colloquially as toe-biters,
Indian toe-biters, electric-light bugs or
alligator ticks

They are the largest insects in the order
Hemiptera, and occur worldwide, with
most of the species in North America,
South America, Northern Australia,
and East Asia

They are typically encountered in
freshwater streams and ponds.

The largest giant water bugsare members
of the genus Lethocerus, which can
exceed 12 cm!!

Giant water bugs are a popular food in
certain countries in southeast Asia

3. Phobaeticus chani

Phobaeticus chani or Chan's megastick is
a species of stick insect. It is the longest
insect in the world, with one specimen
held in the Natural History Museum in
London measuring 567 mm

Named after amateur Malaysian naturalist
Datuk Chan Chew Lun, only six specimens
are known, all originating from the state
of Sabah in Borneo

Very little is known about its biology, but
speculation in the popular press is that it
may live in the canopy of the rainforest
making it especially hard to find

However, no evidence supports this theory
and the related Phobaeticus kirbyi is
commonly found on low-growing vegetation
alongside rainforest paths

4. The Titan Beetle

The titan beetle is one of the largest
beetles, with the largest reliable
measured specimen being 16.7 cm

The short, curved and sharp mandibles
are known to snap pencils in half and
cut into human flesh

The larvae have never been found, but
are thought to feed inside wood and
may take several years to reach full size
before they pupate

The adults defend themselves by hissing
in warning and biting, and have sharp
spines, as well as strong jaws

It is known from the rain forests of
Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador
Peru, the Guianas and north-central Brazil

5. Thysania agrippina

Thysania agrippina is a species of moth in
the Erebidae family. The species has
numerous common names, including white
witch, birdwing moth, ghost moth,
great grey witch, and great owlet moth

It is the lepidopteran with the biggest
wingspan, which typically is reported
as being up to 27–28 cm and one Brazilian
specimen had a wingspan of almost 30 cm

The species occurs in Mexico, Central and
South America, and appears as a stray as
far north as Texas, USA

6. Hercules Beetle

It is the largest of the six species in the
Dynastes genus, and one of the largest
beetles known, up to 17 cm in length

Hercules beetles are highly sexually
dimorphic, with the females generally
being larger-bodied but much shorter
as they lack horns entirely

The larval stage of the Hercules beetle
will last one to two years, with the
larva growing up to 11 cm in length
and weighing more than 100 grams!!

Much of the life of the larva is spent
tunneling through its primary food
source of rotting wood

Adults will roam the forest
floor in search of decaying fruit

7. The Atlas Moth

The Atlas moth (Attacus atlas) is a large
saturniid moth found in the tropical and
subtropical forests of Southeast Asia,
and is common across the
Malay archipelago

Atlas moths are said to be named after
either the Titan of Greek mythology,
or their map-like wing patterns

A record specimen
from Java measured 262 mm!!

In Hong Kong the Cantonese name
translates as "snake's head moth"
referring to the apical extension of
the forewing, which bears a more
than passing resemblance to a
snake's head

In India, Atlas moths are cultivated for
their silk in a non-commercial capacity

Their brown, wool-like silk is thought to
have greater durability and is known
as fagara
